Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislators have been labelled merchants of death as the majority of them are in the habit of driving their parliamentary vehicles without valid driver’s licences, the Harare Post can reveal.
A source who spoke to this publication said that CCC legislators, especially those who hailed from Bulawayo province had no driver’s licences and had been driving without valid licences in defiance of prescribed road rules.
“CCC legislators have become merchants of death as they don’t have driver’s licences. They are reckless in their driving and have no respect for road rules and other road users. Their reckless drivers have the potential to cause accidents and harm to other road users,” said the source.
The source added that Bulawayo senator, Tsepiso Mpofu also known as Hellen Zivira, Makokoba legislator, James Sithole and Bulawayo East legislator Illos Ndlovu were some of the CCC legislators who have no driver’s license.
According to the source, those CCC legislators without licenses are supposed to have hired licenced drivers but are not doing that opting to drive themselves risking other road users.
The same source urged the Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Mudenda and Clerk of Parliament, Kennedy Mugove Chokuda to advise legislators to acquire driver’s licences or hire licenced drivers to avoid road carnages.
“The Speaker of Parliament, Mudenda and Clerk of Parliament, Chokuda must encourage legislators to acquire driver’s licenses. There must be a policy that states that parliamentary vehicles should be disbursed to licenced legislators or those with licenced drivers.
Meanwhile, CCC legislator Sithole was involved in an accident last week on his way from Harare to Bulawayo. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was caused by disobedience of road rules by Sithole. Sithole is likely to be charged for driving without a valid licence.
