Pomona Waste-to-energy Project forging ahead

The GeoPomona Waste Management project is forging ahead despite spirited efforts by opposition Harare councillors to sabotage same.

A source at the GeoPomona Waste (Pvt) Limited disclosed to this publication that the project was forging ahead leaving Harare Mayor, Jacob Mafume with an egg on his face as he was on the forefront of throwing spanners on the deal.

“The claim by Mafumhe that the Pomona deal was fast tracked using unelected councillors from the Movement of Democratic Change (MDC) to prejudice the City and its people was false. It was just a smear campaign by Mafume to gain cheap political mileage. The truth is that, the success of the Pomona deal will cause Harare to get at least half of the proceeds from the sale of the 22 megawatts that would be produced from Pomona,” said the source.

The source added that massive progress has been recorded at Pomona and the installation of the receipting office has been done. The weighbridge is also expected to be completed by the end of this month.

According to the source, the project will see the establishment of a recreational centre with a restaurant, soccer fields as well as basketball and tennis courts.

More so, the source also disclosed that the Government had settled the Harare City Council’s debt towards the GeoPomona Project of approximately US$3, 1 million after the council had hinted that they lack the financial capacity to settle their debt.

Meanwhile, for 30 years, the City of Harare and Geo Pomona Waste Management will work hand-in-hand to ensure the contract was carried through to its successful conclusion.
