Just a day after Zimbabweans peacefully exercised their democratic and constitutional right to vote for their preferred political party and candidates, MDC Alliance shocked the country when they called for an urgent press conference at Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House minutes before the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission slated presser to announce the election results.
Earlier, ZEC had called for a press conference at their Election Command Centre housed at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) and warned stakeholders not to unlawfully announce election results as it is its prerogative.
Shockingly, MDC Alliance declared during their urgent press conference that Nelson Chamisa had resoundingly won as per the results collated by their election agents countrywide.
Chamisa had already threatened that they will not accept any election results that are in favour of Zanu PF. He declared that as MDC Alliance, they will make the country ungovernable and engage in successive demonstrations.
Tendai Biti, a candidate in the Harare East House of Assembly race, told the auditorium during the press conference that Zanu PF has rigged elections and ZEC was not being honest.
Biti raised an unsubstantiated allegation that Zanu PF had given a directive through the Vice President, Rtd General Constatino Chiwenga to assassinate MDC Allianec President, Chamisa and him (Biti).
“An order has been issued by Rtd Gen Chiwenga to have President Chamisa and I assassinated,” he said.
Journalists asked if Biti had evidence to substantiate his serious allegations and if he had reported the threat to the police to which Biti said that the police force was a non-starter.
“It is pointless to make a police report but we are informing our constituencies and the international community,” he added.
A number of unfounded and unsubstantiated allegations have been raised by MDC Alliance in which social media users have interpreted as a sign of panic prior to the announcements of the election results.
During the pre-election period, MDC Alliance tried as much as possible to throw spanners in the whole electoral process through proposed demonstrations in which they intended to "shut down Harare."
