Yesterday’s meeting between MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa and Transform Zimbabwe leader Jacob Ngarivhume has irked senior members of the MDC Alliance who view Ngarivhume as a threat to their positions.
A source who spoke to this publication said Chamisa held a meeting with Ngarivhume yesterday without discussing with some senior members and this has left members worried that Chamisa wants to accommodate Ngarivhume within the MDC Alliance project.
“Yesterday Chamisa held a meeting with Ngarivhume where they discussed ways to work together in the next coming elections. Chamisa did not inform other leaders about his meeting with Ngarivhume and the leaders learnt of the meeting through social media. This has irked some leaders who are of the view that Chamisa’s clandestine meeting with Ngarivhume is meant to accommodate him within the MDC Alliance structures,” said the source.
The source added that the MDC Alliance leaders were also irked by the fact that Chamisa gave Ngarivhume audience despite his inflammatory sentiments soon after the 2018 elections that the Alliance was disorderly and lacked political direction, which led him to abandon it.
“Chamisa should be wary of Ngarivhume who once said the Alliance was disorderly and lacked political direction. Chamisa is being hoodwinked by Ngarivhume to think that they are sailing in the same boat, but the truth is that Ngarivhume want to ride on Chamisa’s popularity to gain political visibility. For your information, a considerable number of potential voters are pressing Ngarivhume to be brave enough to seize the opportunity and lead efforts to coalesce all opposition forces ahead of the 2023 elections.
“This explains why he left the MDC Alliance. He is now feigning closeness to Chamisa in order to create a bigger support base. If this strategy works, Ngarivhume will pull the carpet from underneath Chamisa’s feet and emerge the leader of a united opposition,” added the source.
According to the source, yesterday Chamisa promised Ngarivhume that he would make him one of his deputies if the MDC Alliance happens to win the presidential elections in 2023. It is believed that Chamisa told Ngarivhume that he was surrounded by vultures who are eyeing his position and they are not doing much to market the MDC Alliance to the people.
The MDC Alliance is currently embroiled in factional fights that are threatening to tear apart the opposition party ahead of the 2023 elections.
