Youths demand answers from Harare City Council

Members of the Zimbabwe Revolutionary and Patriotic Youth Network (ZIRAPAYON) have written a letter to the Mayor of Harare City Council, Jacob Mafume, requesting an official statement pertaining to the horrible service delivery by council.

In a statement today, ZIRAPAYON demanded that the Harare Mayor should respond to their letter within 24 hours, failure to do that, they will approach Minister of Local Government and Public Works, July Moyo to dissolve the Council.

“ZIRAPAYON Harare Province in its entirety is deeply perturbed by the Harare City Council. As young people, we have seen the deplorable state of our City by the lack of rubbish collection, lack of water, poor fire services and drainage systems that are not cleared in time before the rains.

“The City is close to a health crisis and with the rains upon us, we are likely to be in a disaster that will be worse than the 2018 cholera outbreak,” read the statement.

The youths said they expect the Council to start addressing their concerns as soon as possible.

“We demand answers and accountability. As such we expect not just a formal statement within the next 24 hours, but action by the council,” further reads the statement.

The youths further said if the Council failed to address challenges facing the City, they will be left with no option, but to approach the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, so that he can remove the council and replace it with an interim committee to run the affairs of the City, until the next elections.

The City of Harare has over the years been making news headlines for failing to provide adequate services to ratepayers amid reports that the council officials are living large at the expense of service delivery.
