Zimbabweans are now turning to the use of Rooftop solar systems as a way to generate more electric power.
Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Development, Fortune Chasi tweeted on his twitter handle.
“Already some companies have started the process of decoupling themselves from the grid by having Rooftop solar systems. Schweppes has spent one million or so dollars on the rooftop solar systems. Turnall Econet have done the same. And so the movement has begun.
“I am happy to meet anyone who has experience in this area or to otherwise communicate with them. Thank you for taking the time to discuss this key strategic issue. Governance role is to create an enabling environment. Through this we will reduce considerably our import bill,” tweeted the Minister.
Government is in a drive to ensure that power generation in the country is improved through the use of other alternative sources of power including solar energy.
In July 2019, Government approved a duty waiver on solar equipment and allowed mining firms to procure energy directly from the Southern African Pool.
Some international companies that are also into solar energy production are also coming in to invest in Zimbabwe. In August last year, a high profile manager who works for Siemens confided in this publication that Siemens is willing to partner with Zimbabwe in the development of alternative sources of power generation to supplement the existing ones.
