The Chinhoyi University of Technology has today conferred President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is also the the University’s Chancellor, with an honorary doctor of Engineering Sciences and Technology.

The conferment was done during the Mashonaland West based university’s colourful 15th graduation ceremony today which was officiated by the President.

The honorary doctorate is in recognition of the President’s determination to improve science and technology in the country in his bid to modernise the economy with an ultimate view of achieving vision 2030.

In his acceptance speech, the President stressed the importance of innovation in growing technology and in enhancing higher living standards.

He said the eventual goal of science and technology must be the development of prototype and registration of patents and commercialisation of finished goods. He challenged universities to take advantage of science and technology to proffer solutions to the challenges currently facing the country.

The honorary doctorate becomes the sixth honour. In October last year, the University of Zimbabwe conferred him with an honorary doctorate in law for his role as a proponent of justice and the rule of law. The same year, the Great Zimbabwe University awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Politics and International Relations in recognition of his unparalleled contribution to society.

The Midlands State University also conferred the President with an Honorary Doctor of Law degree and so did the University of Zambia (Honorary Doctorates in Law) and National Defence University (PHD Security Studies and Defence).
