President Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged all city councils to utilise ratepayers’ money appropriately in promoting service delivery.
The President said these remarks during a clean-up campaign which was held today at Mzimba Shopping Centre in Coldstream, Chinhoyi.
“It’s everyone's duty to maintain a clean environment irrespective of gender. City council should use money collected from ratepayers for service delivery, especially refuse collection,” said the President
He went on to say that the government set aside a monthly clean-up day to ensure that communities keep their environments clean. He said cleanliness starts at individual level and smart individuals will lead to smart communities.
President Mnangagwa said the Constitution provided for devolution and as such, the Government had since disbursed money for the programme as required by law. He emphasised that money disbursed by Central Government should be used for service delivery especially waste management.
“The provincial councils that would soon be established should lead consultations with residents on how the money would be used. Women and youths should form cooperatives to collect recyclable waste as it is also a source of income,” said President Mnangagwa.
Adding on to that, President Mnangagwa said, “This journey we are travelling is a tortuous journey with ups and downs but we will soon overcome them and achieve our goals.
“We have had sanctions for the past 20 years and as SADC leaders, we agreed that October 25 should be Zimbabwe anti sanctions day and at United Nations General Assembly, SADC leaders reiterated that position, calling on the United States of America to remove the sanctions.”
President Mnangagwa also said that Government would continue importing food to mitigate against effects of drought and that the Presidential input scheme would be there to support farmers.
The President also urged school children to take up science subjects and commended the innovation hubs being established at universities saying they have already registered a number of patents.
