Medical Conference set for Vic Falls

The Health Professions Authority and the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe will host the 23rd Association of Medical Councils of Africa (AMCOA) Annual Conference in Victoria Falls from 17 to 21 July 2019.

The 23rdAnnual Conference of AMCOA will be hosted by Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe (MDPCZ) in association with the Health Professions Authority (HPA).

 This will run under the theme; ‘Role of the Regulator in the Delivery of the Universal Health Coverage’.

The theme of the conference resonates well with the Ministry of Health and Child Care Agenda of provision of health at primary level and establishing a National Health Insurance scheme.

The meeting is expected to attract more than 200 delegates from Africa mostly Chairpersons and representatives from Medical, Dental and Health Profession Councils from East Africa, West Africa,  SADC Medical Regulatory bodies, local medical and dental practitioners as well as local health profession Councils.

The conference will also be attended by international delegates who include, the Secretariat from the International Association of Medial Regulatory Authority (IAMRA) based in Washington, USA, Chairperson of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), the regulatory authority of all medical boards in the USA, a representative from the World Medical Association (WMA);  the Association of the Osteopathic Medicine based in the USA and the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) based in Washington USA.

The Conference Coordinator, Mrs Josephine Mwakutuya said more than 150 delegates have already confirmed participation at the conference.

Mrs Makutuya encouraged the local medical, dental practitioners and health professionals, not to miss out this great opportunity so as to network with their peers from the region by partaking in the upcoming conference.

Top on the agenda of the discussions will be the formulation of policies as health professions regulators to ensure that universal health coverage is achieved to the population of Africa.

Health Professions Authority of Zimbabwe Secretary-General, Mr Shepherd Humure, welcomed the hosting of the 23rd AMCOA Conference in Zimbabwe.

He said, “The conference is an opportunity to foster best practices by health professionals and ethical practices as well as harmonization of standards for medical education and training.”

The primary purpose of AMCOA is to support medical regulatory authorities in Africa in the protection of the public interest by promoting high standards of medical registration and regulation, and facilitating the ongoing exchange of information among health regulatory authorities.
