United Kingdom (UK) Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Melanie Robinson was in Chimanimani recently with United Nations (UN) partners to assess UK aid distribution to Cyclone Idai victims

Ms Robinson revealed that $29 million aid had been channelled to Cyclone Idai victims to date from international donors.

During her visit yesterday in Chimanimani, the UK Ambassador said she was devastated by the effects of Cylone Idai and $29 million has been channeled to date.

UN in Zimbabwe and Ambassador’s friends, it’s tragic to see the devastation from Cyclone Idai. But heartening to see how Zimbabwean people came together in the aftermath and great international solidarity as $29 million has been channeled to date,” she said.

On its twitter handle, the United Nations in Zimbabwe twitted, Melanie Robinson‏ whilst in Chimanimani said of the $29 million, so far UK had unveiled $3.9 million to Cyclone Idai victims in Chimanimani.

“I am proud of UK $3.9 million Aid delivered through UN Zimbabwe and partners, is making such an impact. The money was used to acquire 40 000 school books, safe water to over 70 000 people, all the kids were vaccinated against cholera, over 6 300 kids are being kept safe and supported,” she said.

Whilst visiting a clinic in Chipinge and Chimanimani where children are being vaccinated against cholera, she said UK had helped 480 000 people with vaccines.

“Kids are getting their second cholera vaccination. UK Aid helped vaccinate over 480 000 people in Chipinge and Chimanimani after Cyclone Idai. Thankfully there’s been no outbreak,” she said.

UK through its embassy continues to support the victims of Cyclone Idai. Although its support is noble, UK and her international partners must realise that genuine support is the upliftment of sanctions on Zimbabwe since they are affecting the humanitarian cause in the country at large.
