In a bid to gain sympathy and portray itself as a party that impress liberation ethos, the MDC has directed the war veterans within that party to pursue engagement with other liberation movements.
This was revealed in a meeting held in Chinhoyi which was intended for campaigns ahead of the party`s elective congress to be held in Gweru. The meeting, however, failed to materialise after the leadership attended a funeral of party members who perished in a car crash on their way from Bulawayo last week. They therefore engaged in discussions on other party businesses.
Political analyst Tendai Mutekedzi was quick to dismiss MDC`s claims that they have liberation cadres at heart.
“MDC has never ever had liberation ethos. They always wanted to reverse the gains of the liberation struggle. They always wanted to reverse the issue of the land reform programme once voted into power. In short, these guys are puppets and want to pursue the white interests,” he said.
During the Chinhoyi meeting, it was resolved that the United States of America should continue imposing sanctions to Zimbabwe until Zanu PF admits that it has failed to rule the country.
To this, Mr Mutekedzi said it exposed MDC`s hypocrisy. “Yesterday they claimed that there are no sanctions in Zimbabwe and today they say that the US should continue tightening sanction screws for Zimbabwe. They actually capitalise on the suffering of Zimbabweans due to the imposed sanctions, that is why they don’t wish they away any time soon,” he said.
The meeting also resolved that they want to penetrate and mobilise support in the rural community in preparation for the 2013 general election.
Mr Mutekedzi said that the issue of the opposition party penetrating the rural areas had always been on their agenda as they wish to boost their grassroots support. He said MDC would never win the hearts of the rural folk because Zanu Pf was providing developmental projects to cushion the rural electorate. He added that unlike Zanu PF, the MDC is not visible on the ground.
