The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Engineer Biggie Matiza yesterday launched the first Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) Electronic Learners Licence Testing system.
The system was developed under the Zimbabwe Integrated Transport Management Information Systems (ZIMTIS) project which is a Public -Private Partnership venture between Government and Southern Region Trading Company (SRTC).
In his address, Minister Matiza told the auditorium that the new system will eliminate proxies for corruption in the licensing sector.
He added that it will also help plug revenue leakages in the department which has been dogged by corruption.
Minister Matiza lamented the increase in road accidents mostly attributed to human error.
“As a result, effective driver training and testing becomes a cornerstone of the Ministry’s strategy to reduce road carnages. Likewise, this will plug any incidences of rampant corruption in the acquisition of a Provisional drivers licence,” he said.
The system will lessen the burden of bringing passport photos as it has an option where it will electronically capture the learner’s data as part of bookings.
Minister Matiza said that the new system would eliminate the issue of slotting learners and therefore increase the efficiency of VID as it would accommodate everyone who would have booked electronically.
“We have a growing demand and therefore it was long overdue for the department to come up with means that will improve our efficiency,” he said.
The Minister advised the public that the electronic system has water tight security features thereby assuring the auditorium that it will beat fake and fraudulent documents.
