The National Clean Up Campaign launched by the President in Highfield on 05 December 2018 will tomorrow march ahead as the nation embraces the program to achieve a clean and healthy environment.

President Mnangagwa declared the first Friday of every month, since then going forward, to be a national day for cleaning. The First Lady Mrs Auxillia Mnangagwa is the matron of the national day.

A brief released by the Secretary, in the Ministry of Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Mr Munesuishe Munodawafa on 02 January 2019, said, “The Ministry of Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry is calling on all Zimbabweans to take part in this exercise on the 4th of January 2019, which is the First Friday of the month of January.

The main activity is expected to be led by the First Lady Amai Mnangagwa in Bulawayo, while in all other provinces, Provincial Ministers of State will lead individuals, corporates, civil society, development partners and churches in undertaking this task in their respective areas. To assist with coordination, teams have been organised to clean up identified public places countrywide.

It is expected that leadership at every level will take a lead in championing this noble cause.”

“The National Clean-Up was successfully launched by His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, CDE ED Mnangagwa on the 5th of December 2018. The campaign was launched under the theme Zero Tolerance to Litter-My Environment, My Pride,” said Mr Munodawafa.”

“In line with this declaration, every citizen  is urged to clean their surrounding areas; places of work, religion, education, recreational and residential premises, vending sites, car parks and road servitudes by picking litter, sweeping or clearing waste dumps for  2 hours between  0800hrs and 1000hrs. Our participation in this noble cause will assist in fulfilling the constitutional provisions as set out in Section 73 of our Constitution for Zimbabweans to enjoy a clean, safe and healthy environment,” urged the Ministry.

The Environmental Management Agency is the leading cooperating partner of this national effort. Zimbabwe suffered a crippling cholera outbreak that claimed the lives of 55 people while infecting thousands other survivors in 2018. Cholera is a filth promoted disease, therefore the Government efforts at promoting national hygiene are aimed at stalling the thriving of such diseases.

Also, the Tourism sector aims to promote a tourist friendly, clean environment nationally.
