Chamisa abusing democratic space

Various political analysts have applauded the Second Republic for ushering in a political democratic space which they say is now being abused by many.

In an interview with the Harare Post, one of the analysts who asked for anonymity said that President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s new dispensation has ushered in a democratic space for political parties and activists.

He said that Nelson Chamisa was abusing the space for political convenience.  “It’s unfortunate that MDC leader Chamisa has decided to abuse the rights that were ushered in by the new dispensation,” he said.

Making reference to the continued heckling of Constitutional establishment, various lawyers said that Chamisa was on the verge of committing a serious offence of contempt of Court.

They said that even if it was a democratic right for any individual to say whatever they want under the Right to Freedom act in the Constitution, Chamisa has decided to include subtle incites and the court is taking note of the breaches.

“Under the right of freedom, everyone has a right to say whatever they want and they feel so long it maintains and preserves peace in the country. Chamisa as an officer of law should be very conversant with the law.

“He has every right but once he uses his right to breach peace prevalent in the country, the court will charge him for contempt of the court,” he said.

Addressing a gathering recently, President Mnangagwa said it was regrettable that some individuals are bent on abusing the democracy that people are now enjoying.

“The new dispensation opened up democratic space with individuals and civil society groups now openly expressing themselves although some have taken advantage of this openness to engage in violent demonstrations and propagation of hate speech especially on social media,” said President Mnanngagwa.

He labelled the culprits as retrogressive, unpatriotic and selfish individuals.

Meanwhile, during his appearance before the Commission of Inquiry yesterday, Chamisa threatened to stage a series of demonstrations to force his way into Government.
