Selous Scout to Chair MDC War Vets wing

By Bruce Zvandasara

Former Selous Scout member, David Coltart, is making strides to chair the War Veterans department which the MDC Alliance is mulling to form, it has emerged.

Coltart, who applied to join the BSAP early 1975 when he was still underage, a sign which show his enthusiasm to join the force which was responsible for dumbing and killing Zimbabwe’s liberation cadres who were fighting the Smith Regime.

Such is the hypocrisy that characterises the opposition. Investigations carried out by this publication revealed that the idea might suffer a still birth as many in the party are sceptic of Coltart’s leadership in the wing they intend to create.

Coltart who joined the Rhodie Cadet section as a cadet 883, took an oath which thwarted efforts of the ZANLA and ZIPRA forces who were fighting the Smith regime to bring about a new Zimbabwe.

Taking his oath on October 4 1975, Coltart sincerely promised and swear that he would be faithful and bear full allegiance to Rhodesia and prevent offences against the Rhodesian Government.

Liberation war cadres narrated that Coltart would dumb liberation fighters in disused mine shafts near Chibondo and that he was quick to abandon the force in the 1978s when it became evident that the Rhodies were losing the war. Because of fear of war crimes, it was revealed that Coltart fled for South Africa and enrolled at a University to study law though he had dismally performed during his Advanced Level at Christian Brothers College where he attained 3Es.

Political commentators have lampooned the MDC idea that it was provocative of the liberation gains to be headed by one who was against the war that brought about independence in Zimbabwe.

It is not clear as to who would occupy the wing that MDC wants to create and what would be the definition of war vets.

A source who asked to remain anonymous said that it appeared MDC was relying on Zanu PF rejected cadres to be incorporated in the much hyped war vets wing. Recently, Nelson Chamisa agreed to rope in former Zanu PF cadre, Dzikamai Mavhaire which has seen new fissures emerging in the opposition political party.
