Chibaya tries to court Speaker to thwart his recall

This move comes amid looming threats of Chibaya’s recall from parliament by his party's interim Secretary General, Sengezo Tshabangu.

According to a source, Chibaya, whose political future hangs in the balance, has embarked on an all-out effort to sway Speaker Mudenda's decision and evade the recall.

The source added that Chibaya was sparing no effort to endear himself with Mudenda, employing a mix of flattery and strategic promises.

"Chibaya is fully invested in winning Mudenda's favour. He has been effusive in his praise for the Speaker, and there is a talk of him making lofty promises, including bridging gaps between CCC and ZANU PF for parliamentary collaboration," the source disclosed.

The source elaborated that Chibaya was attempting to leverage his position and influence within the CCC to propose a potential cooperation with the ruling Zanu PF Party, positioning himself as a mediator between Nelson Chamisa, the CCC's leader, and Zanu PF.

The same source added that this approach by Chibaya was part of a broader strategy to demonstrate his value and indispensability to Speaker Mudenda.

However, Chibaya's efforts reportedly extend beyond mere political survival.

"There is more to his strategy than just holding onto his seat. Chibaya is also eyeing additional benefits like securing fuel coupons for himself and other members facing recall. He is constantly complimenting Mudenda, lauding his leadership in parliament, and expressing admiration in hopes of gaining favour and additional perks," added the source.

Political analyst, Nobleman Runyanga said that Chibaya's tactics characterised by a blend of charm and strategic alliances, signify a crucial moment in his political career.

“By aligning himself with Mudenda and signalling willingness for inter-party cooperation, Chibaya is seemingly attempting to outmanoeuvre the recall threat and retain his influence in Zimbabwean politics,” said Runyanga.

Despite Chibaya's intensive efforts, Tshabangu remains steadfast in his determination to proceed with the recalls.

The CCC Secretary General has expressed a firm commitment to ensuring the restoration of democracy within the party.
