Former NPP members’ admission causes divisions in MDC

During a Provincial Assembly meeting held in Masvingo, former National People’s Party (NPP) top official Dzikamai Mavhaire and former Zanu-PF Mwenezi East legislator Kudakwashe Bhasikiti were introduced to the provincial executive. Chaos arose when MDC alliance party rebels who had contested as independent candidates queried the admission.

The MDC rebels argued that they had been treated harshly compared to former ZANU PF members whom they say were treated with lenience. The MDC Alliance rebels accused Mavhaire and Bhasikiti for allegedly torturing MDC supporters before they left ZANU PF.

In another Provincial Assembly meeting that was held in Manicaland, five MDC Alliance rebels were ejected from the meeting after similar squabbles arose. The five were; Morgan Chipara former MDC-T Mutare Central District Assembly Chairperson who had contested as independent in Ward 5, Pamela Mutare who had contested as MDC-Khupe faction candidate in ward 6 Mutare Central, Webber Chinyadze who had contested as independent for Mutare West constituency, Innocent Dube who had contested as independent for Chimanimani East and losing independent candidate for Musikavanhu constituency Pishai Muchaurawa.

The same happened at the Bindura District Executive meeting were members raised reservations over the admission of former National People’s Party (NPP) members into the alliance. They alleged that MDC Alliance President, Nelson Chamisa promised eight former NPP members some posts.

Chamisa is alleged to have declared himself uncontested in the upcoming 2019 MDC Alliance elective congress. Chamisa is alleged to have sent MDC Alliance National Chaiperson, Tabitha Khumalo and MDC National Organising Secretary, Amos Chibaya to sell the narrative that Chamisa would not be contested. On the other hand, MDC Secretary General, Douglas Mwonzora and MDC Vice President Elias Mudzuri say the presidency should be contested.
