Parents across the country have begun preparing for the start of the 2025 school year after the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education officially confirmed that schools will open for the first term on Tuesday, January 14. The term will run until Thursday, April 10, with the Ministry urging the public to disregard earlier rumours that suggested a January 6 reopening.

The Ministry's clarification follows the circulation of false information on social media, causing confusion among parents and guardians who were uncertain about the exact reopening date. With the official date now confirmed, parents have expressed relief and shared their plans for ensuring their children are ready for the new school term.

In an interview with this publication, Grace Chirwa expressed gratitude for the clarity provided by the Ministry.

“We had heard rumours about an earlier start, and I was starting to worry about how I would get everything ready in time. Now that the date is confirmed, I can finalize the school supplies, uniform shopping, and make sure the kids are all set for the new term,” she said.

Many parents are using the extra time before January 14 to get uniforms, books, and other supplies. For some, the early confirmation of the date had allowed them to plan financially.

“I am glad the Ministry has cleared up the confusion. The extra days have given me time to budget and ensure that my children have everything they need for school. It is always a bit of a struggle to get the kids ready, but with this announcement, we can avoid the stress,” said Gift Moyo.

Some parents have expressed concern about the safety of Grade 1 and Form 1 students who will be entering a new environment.

"I am concerned about the safety of my son as he will be going to a boarding school. I am hoping the new school has teachers who are professional and devoted to their work. I hope they will prioritize the children's safety," shared one worried parent.

For now, families across the country are using the time leading up to January 14 to ensure that their children’s return to school is as smooth and stress-free as possible.
