Government of Zimbabwe has escalated its efforts to combat drug and substance abuse across the country.
In a recent post-cabinet briefing, Minister of Publicity, Information, and Broadcasting Services, Jenfan Muswere, said that since January 2024, a significant number of individuals have been apprehended.
“Since January 2024, about 6,148 people were arrested; 677 were suppliers, and 5,471 were end-users. This crackdown extended to identifying and dismantling 106 illegal drug trading bases across strategic locations, including Harare, Shamva, Chinhoyi, Bindura, Bulawayo, and Mutare,” Minister Muswere said.
Furthermore, Muswere highlighted Government’s efforts to regulate liquor outlets.
“Fifty-one liquor outlets were charged for operating without the correct licenses, while 268 operators were also arrested for violating license conditions, 17 outlets had their licenses cancelled for violating operating conditions,” Minister Muswere said.
The Minister also underscored the importance of accelerating awareness campaigns targeting individuals of all age groups.
Cabinet’s approval of the Zimbabwe Multi-Sectoral Drug and Substance Abuse Plan 2024–2030 was also highlighted as a pivotal milestone in addressing the escalating threat posed by substance abuse.
“This plan outlines a comprehensive strategic approach to address the escalating threat of drug and substance abuse to public health, economic growth, national security, and social stability in Zimbabwe,” added the Minister.
To bolster enforcement, Government also announced the expedited decentralisation of the Drug and Narcotics Department and the review and adjustment of the fine structure.
“The establishment of outpatient psychosocial support centres and parenting groups countrywide, as well as the purchase of psychotropic medicines and food provisions for rehabilitation centres, will be expedited,” Minister Muswere stated.
Moreso, Minister Muswere reaffirmed Government’s commitment, stating, “The Government remains resolute in its efforts to combat drug and substance abuse.”
The Minister emphasised the need for a comprehensive approach encompassing awareness campaigns, youth empowerment initiatives, and strategic policy frameworks.
Meanwhile, the Minister mentioned that the Youth Service training programme will commence in June 2024.
“The Youth Service in Zimbabwe training programme will start in June 2024 at Dadaya and Vumba Training Centres. Furthermore, efforts towards financial inclusivity have been amplified; a total of USD20,000 has been loaned to youths across the country for income-generating projects through the Empower Bank,” Minister Muswere noted.
