In a bid to maintain political relevance months after stepping down as leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Nelson Chamisa has launched a WhatsApp news channel, sparking diverse reactions among his followers and political observers.
Chamisa’s move to launch a WhatsApp news channel comes amidst perceptions of Chamisa's diminishing influence in Zimbabwe’s political landscape as the country continues to evolve without his active participation in the political arena.
Political commentator Tendai Rukweza questioned the rationale behind the personalisation of the platform, suggesting it might undermine the broader objectives of leadership and continuity.
“Chamisa's decision to open a WhatsApp news channel is a clear indicator that he is striving to remain relevant in Zimbabwe's political sphere. It seems he has recognised that the country is moving forward without him, and this digital platform could be his way of ensuring he remains a part of the conversation,” said Rukweza.
Rukweza added that this strategy to launch a WhatsApp news channel could be seen as a double-edged sword.
“On one hand, it offers Chamisa a platform to communicate directly with his base, potentially galvanising support for any future political endeavours. On the other hand, the personalised nature of the channel and the ensuing criticisms highlight the challenges he faces in balancing personal branding with collective leadership aspirations,” added Rukweza.
Other netizens also raised concerns over the channel's personalised nature.
A netizen who uses the monicker @Mazakhela voiced a common critique, saying, "Why personalise it if you are a leader? When Chamisa dies, what happens? Does it collapse, or is it taken over by your children? At this stage, I realise maybe Biti and Welshman are correct; you like personalising things. This is a no-no. The fact that you even thought of it is shocking.”
Echoing this sentiment, one @Matsveru added, "You are too self-centred; everything has to be about you. Chamisa chete chete (Chamisa and only Chamisa)."
Since his resignation from the CCC in January, Chamisa has left his supporters guessing about his next move.
While there has been speculative talk of a new 'Blue Movement,' party, Chamisa has yet to make any official announcement or launch, keeping his political future a subject of much speculation.
