Zimbabwe’s media industry is set to play a pivotal role in advancing sustainable development, as government and development partners collaborate to leverage its influence in educating the public and mobilizing support for key initiatives.
A week-long media workshop, organized by the United Nations, is currently underway in Masvingo. The program aims to empower journalists with the skills and knowledge to effectively communicate critical development agendas, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Africa Agenda 2063. These frameworks are vital for promoting values of inclusivity, resilience, and progress.
Speaking at the event, Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Ezra Chadzamira, emphasized the media’s role in shaping public opinion and promoting sustainable practices.
“The media is crucial in fostering sustainable development by shaping public opinion, raising awareness, and influencing behaviours. It serves as a primary source of information, providing analysis and commentary that empowers citizens to make informed decisions. I also commend journalists for their role in mitigating climate shocks, such as the El Niño-induced drought, and pledged government support for such initiatives,” he noted.
Permanent Secretary for Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana represented by Director Media Services, George Chisoko, highlighted the media’s responsibility in supporting Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).
“The media must raise awareness of NDS1 and rally the populace behind its strategies for achieving Vision 2030. Development must be inclusive, leaving no one and no place behind. The media should amplify the voices of marginalized communities to ensure their challenges are addressed,” he said.
United Nations Resident Coordinator, Edward Kallon, reiterated the UN’s commitment to fostering a robust media landscape in Zimbabwe.
“The media is a pivotal tool for shaping public opinion, promoting democracy, and driving sustainable development. Used responsibly, platforms like print, electronic, and web-based media can unlock substantial opportunities for Zimbabwe’s growth,” said Kallon.
The workshop underscores the essential role of the media in addressing global challenges such as hunger, inequality, and climate change, ensuring that Zimbabwe remains on track toward achieving the SDGs and Vision 2030.
