Government has announced a series of robust measures aimed at curbing the spread of cholera ahead of the Easter holidays.
During a post-cabinet briefing, Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, Jenfan Muswere, highlighted the urgency of the situation and outlined Government’s strategies to address it.
“The safety and well-being of our citizens are paramount, particularly during times of heightened social gatherings such as the Easter holidays. We cannot afford to overlook the risks posed by cholera outbreaks, and it is imperative that we take proactive measures to mitigate these risks,” Minister Muswere emphasized
In accordance with President Mnangagwa’s directive, Minister Muswere announced plans to install solarized water facilities and boreholes at key sites, to ensure the provision of safe water and sanitation.
“The President has directed swift action to address the root causes of cholera outbreaks, including lack of access to clean water and sanitation facilities in certain areas. By implementing solar-powered water solutions, we aim to provide sustainable access to safe water for all,” stated Minister Muswere.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has been tasked to intensify monitoring and supervision of all gatherings to minimize the spread of cholera. Minister Muswere reiterated Government’s stance on church gatherings.
“Until adequate water and sanitation facilities are in place, no church gatherings will be permitted. It is essential that we prioritize the health and safety of our citizens above all else,” Minister Muswere said
Meanwhile, efforts to strengthen cholera preparedness and response are underway in high-risk provinces, including Midlands, Masvingo, Mashonaland Central, and Mashonaland West.
Minister Muswere emphasized the importance of community engagement and awareness-raising activities in these areas.
“We are conducting integrated training sessions and deploying resources to known hotspots to ensure timely detection and management of cholera cases. By working together with local communities, we can effectively combat the spread of cholera and protect public health,” concluded Minister Muswere.
Government’s proactive approach to cholera prevention underscores its commitment to safeguarding the well-being of all citizens. As Zimbabwe prepares to celebrate the Easter holidays, these measures serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining hygiene and sanitation practices to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
