Former president of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Nelson Chamisa is accused of misappropriating that party’s funds from well-wishers and sponsors leading up to the August 2023 harmonised General elections.
According to a source within CCC, who spoke to this publication on the basis of anonymity, “Members of CCC have rejected Chamisa’s resignation, as we are demanding he first handover the audited financial records of CCC and all the party assets.
“Chamisa must not leave the party until he first accounts for the party’s funds that are not making sense and were not disbursed, there must be transparency and accountability first for everyone including Chamisa,” said the source.
Previously, the former CCC leader was also accused of thieving funds starting with money meant for his bulletproof car which never surfaced in reality.
On the same, in an interview with this publication, political Analyst Elton Ziki commented saying that Chamisa has a continued history of misappropriating even during his tenure with the MDC-Alliance
“Chamisa has a well-known record of embezzlement of party funds, in 2022 he allegedly failed to show up at the Golden Conifer for the handover ceremony of his bulletproof car which was donated by well-wishers through the GoFundMe initiative spearheaded by a group called Citizens Action for Change (CAC), the money amounted to USD 120000,” Ziki asserted
Ziki also added that, “It is alleged that the well-wishers were always asking for updates on what had become of the vehicle and the money donated, but to no avail,”
Therefore, this questioned the motive of the GoFundMe initiative, allegations even arose indicating that Chamisa, might have initiated the GOFUNDME, for his selfish reasons.
Another political analyst, choosing to remain anonymous weighed in on this issue, stating, “If someone like Chamisa is mismanaging his own party funds the latter cannot do a better job with public funds.”
Furthermore, Legal action might be taken against Chamisa, by CCC members to account for the funds which are yet to be recovered.
