Gvt committed to supporting global compact initiatives

Honourable Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Kazembe Kazembe said Zimbabwe was fully committed and supports the global compact initiatives on migration.

Speaking in Harare during the launch of the Migration Statistics and Regulation of Migrant Skills in Zimbabwe (MSRMSZ), Minister Kazembe said government of Zimbabwe had since resolved to commit itself to global migration initiatives with particular emphasis on the creation of safe and orderly migration.

“The Government of Zimbabwe is fully committed to supporting the Global Compact initiatives on migration, with particular emphasis on the creation of safe and orderly migration through the crafting and utilization of a migration policy that is both regionally and continentally compliant and consistent with the relevant Sustainable Development Goals,” he said.

Minister Kazembe implored on all stakeholders who were present at the launch of the MSRMSZ to be rigorous in their analysis and also to take stock of the current data collection systems whilst also identifying possible strengths and weaknesses in the system.

“As we launch this noble project distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, may I appeal to you to be as exhaustive as possible in your deliberations so that the end product will be a notable game changer in the way migration governance programs are managed and articulated. I urge you to take stock of your current data collection systems, identify their strengths and possibly weaknesses and see how best projects like this one could be utilized to enhance migration data collection and utilization,” said Minister Kazembe.

The Economic Commission for Africa, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) were also commended by Minister Kazembe for coming at a time Zimbabwe Government is almost concluding on its process of crafting the Zimbabwe Migration policy.

The Minister also expressed optimism in the outcome of deliberations which will be made by all the stakeholders.
