Vice President, who is also the Minister of Health and Child Care, Gen (Rtd), Dr Constantino Chiwenga has described the late ZANU PF National Spokesperson, Cde Simon Khaya Moyo as a veteran freedom fighter who was humble, dedicated and served the country wholeheartedly.
In a condolence message yesterday, Vice President Chiwenga said he was devastated to learn of Cde Khaya Moyo’s death.
“He was a humble and dedicated cadre of the armed struggle, who also served the country wholeheartedly, in various capacities. I was devastated to learn of the death of Cde Simon Khaya Moyo, one of our veteran freedom fighters in the armed struggle for National Independence.
“Cde Moyo (76), passed away on 14 November 2021, at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo, after battling with cancer for a long time. Ambassador Khaya Moyo was a veteran politician, the Party’s spokesperson and member of the Politburo,” reads part of the Statement.
Vice President Chiwenga chronicled the liberation history of Ambassador Khaya Moyo, highlighting that he belonged to a pioneering generation of freedom fighters, who started as activists in the Youth Wing of the Nationalist Movement, in the then Rhodesia.
“The veteran politician joined the liberation struggle in Zambia, at a tender age. He was then sent to Makerere University to further his studies. Upon return, he was appointed Political Secretary to the then President of ZAPU, Cde J. M. N. Nkomo. The late Cde Moyo served as Special Assistant to the President of ZAPU, for a very long time,” said the Vice President.
The late Ambassador Moyo, who died at Mater Dei hospital in Bulawayo on Sunday after a long illness, held several key appointments, among them diplomat, Cabinet Minister and Senator. At the time of his death, he was the Senator for Bulilima and Mangwe constituencies.
Vice President Chiwenga noted that the country had lost a brave fighter and solid veteran of the Liberation Struggle.
“I wish to express my deepest, most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Moyo Family, especially to his grieving wife, children, the Ruling Party ZANU PF and the nation at large. May they derive solace from the fact that we join them in mourning this illustrious son of the soil, who was one of us and indeed, a determined liberator of his People and Nation,” he said.
