Following President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s stern warning to the gun-toting robbers that have terrorised the citizens, by robbing them at gun point, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has taken it upon itself to ensure that peace is maintained by forming crack teams across the country to bring a stop to these terrifying robberies.
In a press statement Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi reiterated President Mnangagwa’s urgency to put an end to the gun-toting robbers.
“The ZRP will brook no nonsense in dealing with armed robbery cases, stern action will thus be taken by Police crack teams to ensure that the country is rid of criminals. Robbers who engage in shoot-outs, confrontations and fighting with the Police crack teams will be severely dealt with,” Nyati said
Giving a blow by blow description of events during some of the crackdown missions, Commissioner Nyathi said, “A CID Homicide crack team pounced on the gang in Kuwadzana 1, Harare after receiving information resulting in shoot-out. Three suspects were shot in the leg and subsequently arrested. One suspect identified as Dennis Munzara escaped while the Toyota Wish’s tyres were deflated. The Vehicle is now in police custody while the three suspects are now admitted in hospital under police guard.
Narrating on another crackdown team, Nyathi said, “ Another crackdown team received information that a separate gang was using an unregistered Honda Fit vehicle to commit robbery cases in Glen View and Budiriro suburbs. The suspects were identified as Munya, Simba, Kheda also known as Gunners and Mosby.”
Munya was killed in the Police shoot-out where he charged toward the Police with an axe.
“After being cornered,the suspect tried to attack the same police officer and he was then shot on the left shoulder. Munya was taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Several sim cards, two cellphones, USD4.00 and ZW$1010.00 were recovered from the body,” Commissioner Nyathi said.
Meanwhile the Police have urged the public to continue cooperating with them.
