Mwonzora slates Chamisa over “rescue” position

The MDC deputy secretary for international relations, Douglas Mwonzora is unhappy with his position which was doled out to him by the party leader, Nelson Chamisa to rescue him from becoming an ordinary party member following his unsuccessful bidding for the secretary general position at the party’s congress held in Gweru last month.

Mwonzora sees his new position as meant to put him down politically.

This came out in a Facebook post which Mwonzora made this week in response to another made by one Facebook user, Bishop RemaBishop to the Democracy Advocate Initiative (DAI) purporting to be Mwonzora accepting his position and pledging to support Chamisa.

Mwonzora prevaricated when pressed by other participants in the discussion to clarify his position on the post to which Chamisa had appointed.

“My position is that I am part and parcel of the democratic struggle to free our people from all forms of tyranny that have been brought to bear on them. I will be a key actor in this struggle whether or not I hold a position of leadership within the MDC,” he wrote.

Mwonzora tacitly described the position as humiliation before comparing himself with Chamisa in terms of his own history and contribution to opposition politics.

“There is no need to humiliate anyone in this struggle. There is no need to spread hate language struggle against other democratic fighters. Our history in the struggle is there for all to see,” he said.

He took a dig at Chamisa for using his position as the leader of the party to consolidate his power by bringing other senior party members down.

“You don’t rise by bringing your brother in the struggle down. Instead you rise by working with all the democratic forces in the country,” he said.

He denied ever seeing any communication confirming the appointment to his new position in the party citing that he was away in Geneva on parliamentary business.

“The post in question did not come from me because I have not seen any appointment concerning me. My attitude to it will be communicated once I see it,” he said.
