The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works has appealed for bed donations to support drug rehabilitation centres across Zimbabwe. The initiative is meant to strengthen the country's fight against drug and substance abuse.
In a statement recently, the Ministry emphasised the pivotal role of the Resource Mobilisation Pillar within the National Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse.
This pillar is tasked with gathering and coordinating resources to empower all the seven pillars working together to address the ongoing drug and substance abuse.
“The Resource Mobilisation Pillar in the National Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse is mandated to seek, coordinate, and pool resources together for all seven pillars so as to enable them to manage the menace of drug and substance abuse in Zimbabwe," the statement read.
The Ministry revealed that 63 drug rehabilitation and livelihood centres had already been identified nationwide.
However, many of these centres are facing a shortage of essential resources, particularly hospital admission beds, which are critical for the care of individuals undergoing rehabilitation.
“Most of the availed rehabilitation institutions are in dire need of hospital admission beds,” the Ministry highlighted.
To address the challenge, the National Committee is reaching out to both private and government institutions to donate unused beds from their facilities.
"The National Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse is kindly appealing to all private and government institutions to donate beds which are not in use at their facilities,” the statement added.
This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to enhance the capacity of rehabilitation centres, enabling them to provide better support for individuals recovering from drug and substance abuse.
Government’s proactive approach underscores its commitment to tackling this pressing societal issue and ensuring a brighter future for affected individuals and communities.
The Ministry is optimistic that Zimbabweans, institutions, and organisations will unite in this noble cause to help build better-equipped rehabilitation facilities across the country.
