The Directorate of Civil Protection in the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing has dismissed claims that Manyere Dam on Nyamakati River in Vumba could breach following cyclone Idai.
In a press statement released yesterday, the Ministry assured Vumba residents and surrounding areas that Manyere Dam is structurally safe.
“Manyere has been spilling for some time following the heavy rains due to Cyclone Idai. The continued spilling may have raised concerns for communities downstream. It has since been established that the dam wall is intact and safe.
“Water levels are still high from the spill. Water levels in Nyamakati River are high. Therefore it is advised to stay clear of the river and be on the lookout for danger
Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services has also come out saying that engineers have confirmed that the Dam is safe. This put to rest alleged announcement by the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) and Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs Ellen Gwaradzimba that Manyera Dam Wall could breach. The alleged announcement had warned those living downstream to evacuate and go to higher places.
“We have been informed that checks by engineers have confirmed that both Witchood and Manyera Dam are structurally safe. The earlier cautionary announcement is withdrawn. We thank the agencies for acting on this in a timely manner and avoided unnecessary disruption,” said the Ministry.
