Following the violent and destructive protests of 14 January, which were called for by the MDC Alliance, the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) and some civil society organisations ostensibly to register their disquiet over the fuel increases announced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa two days earlier, the opposition is making baseless claims of persecution. An examination of the involvement of the MDC Alliance’s members in the protests, lays bare the fact that the party’s claims are blatantly false.

South Africa`s opposition party Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, Mmusi Maimane has no tangible evidence to support his press briefing. Maimane talks about Zimbabweans exercising their democratic rights to protest but he does not know that it was the hooligans who protested in the name of peaceful demonstrations. The looters and thugs who wanted to rob people`s wealth are the ones he terms Zimbabweans demonstrating their democratic rights.

This week, the country woke up to the news that the South African opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, Mmusi Maimane intended to take President Emmerson Mnangagwa to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged human rights abuses following the opposition-instigated protests which rocked the country in mid-January. Maimane’s planned initiative is baseless and exposes his shallow understanding of how the ICC operates and his desperation for attention.

Of late there has been disturbing allegations of torture on civilians by members of the security services. Equally disturbing has been allegations of harassment of vendors by the same security forces. The allegations are a cause for concern on two fronts. Firstly, the torturing of civilians can never be condoned and no person can ever defend that.

The trial and conviction of some people who looted and burnt shops during violent protests that rocked the country a fortnight ago is a vindication of what government authorities have been saying all along that had it not been security forces interventions, more serious acts of violence could have happened. This exposes the unjustified and unwarranted criticism of the security forces for their intervention by certain political groups and non-governmental organizations.

The calls for the European Union (EU) and the United States of America (USA) to lift sanctions on Zimbabwe by prominent African leaders that include Rwandese president Paul Kagame and South African president Cyril Ramaphosa is commendable, as it adds more voices in calling for the end of the illegal western sanctions which have hurt the country's economy for nearly 20 years.
