March 31 Protests: A Doomed and Futile Attempt

Anashe Mpamombe

The much-hyped 31 March 2025 protests against President Emmerson Mnangagwa are bound to fail. These demonstrations lack substance, credibility, and genuine support, making them nothing more than a misguided attempt to stir up unrest. The protest has no real backing from the people of Zimbabwe. The majority of citizens are not interested in engaging in actions that could lead to instability, especially when the so-called movement is being driven by unknown figures with no credibility or clear agenda. Zimbabweans understand the risks associated with such futile demonstrations and are unlikely to participate in an event that serves no real purpose.

Successful movements require structure, vision, and leadership. The March 31 protest has none of these elements. It is being promoted by faceless individuals who lack influence or the ability to rally meaningful support. Without clear direction or an effective strategy, the protest is doomed to be an empty stunt rather than a serious political event. The state security apparatus is fully aware of any attempts to create disorder and is well-equipped to deal with such disruptions. The Government, like in any other democracy, will not tolerate lawlessness or any reckless behavior aimed at causing unnecessary chaos. Any efforts to destabilize Zimbabwe through unstructured protests will be swiftly dealt with, ensuring that peace and order are maintained.

Ordinary citizens are focused on progress and economic development, not on protests that offer no solutions. Zimbabweans recognize the importance of stability and are not willing to risk their livelihoods for a movement that lacks direction and legitimacy. Empty slogans and social media propaganda will not sway a nation that understands the value of peace. The reality is that the March 31 protest is already a failure before it even begins. It lacks public interest, leadership, and an actionable cause. Those behind it are wasting their time, and anyone hoping for a large-scale movement will be sorely disappointed. Zimbabwe will move forward as usual, unaffected by this desperate and meaningless act of defiance.

This protest is nothing more than an illusion created by individuals with no real influence or support. Zimbabweans are not interested in reckless uprisings, and the Government remains firmly in control. It is time to focus on real progress instead of entertaining baseless calls for disorder. This protest will come and go without making any impact, proving once again that empty activism has no place in Zimbabwe’s future. The people of Zimbabwe have demonstrated time and again that they will not be swayed by reckless calls for action that put their security and livelihoods at risk. The so-called March 31 movement is nothing but a collection of unrealistic demands, false promises, and misguided ambitions. Those behind it fail to recognize the reality on the ground. Zimbabweans have endured many hardships, but they have also shown resilience and a desire for genuine change through constructive means, not through reckless demonstrations that lack foresight or planning.

Moreover, the reliance on social media as a tool for mobilization is deeply flawed. The majority of Zimbabweans either do not have access to these platforms or do not use them for political engagement. The idea that a few viral videos can trigger a mass uprising is laughable. The real Zimbabwean struggle is not fought on Twitter or Facebook but through diligent efforts to build communities, businesses, and a stable future. Those pushing for this protest ignore the fact that the nation's citizens value tangible progress over empty gestures. The protest organizers claim to have support from various sectors, yet no credible political, civil, or religious organizations have openly endorsed them. A genuine movement requires transparency and a clearly defined purpose, both of which this so-called uprising lacks. It is easy to sit behind a screen and call for revolution, but real change demands dedication, planning, and public trust—none of which the March 31 group possesses.

There is also the question of what these protestors actually hope to achieve. Vague calls for “change” mean nothing without a structured plan. Zimbabweans have seen enough of political opportunists trying to manipulate public emotions for their own selfish gains. If the March 31 movement had a legitimate vision, it would have presented clear policies, engaged with stakeholders, and worked within existing democratic frameworks. Instead, it relies on baseless claims, exaggerated grievances, and fear-mongering tactics that only serve to divide rather than unite the people. President Mnangagwa has implemented various measures to stabilize and grow the economy, and the focus should be on constructive discussions rather than chaotic attempts to overthrow a legitimately elected Government.

The Government has shown resilience against baseless insurrections and will not hesitate to uphold the law against any attempts to create disorder. The state's readiness to counter any unrest further reduces the likelihood of success for the March 31 demonstrations. Law enforcement agencies will take the necessary steps to ensure peace and stability, and any illegal activities will be met with the full force of the law. The futility of this protest is evident in its lack of direction, lack of public interest, and lack of viable leadership. Zimbabwe is on a path of growth, and efforts should be directed toward nation-building rather than wasting time on doomed protests. Those who genuinely care about Zimbabwe’s future will focus on progress, dialogue, and constructive engagement rather than empty political stunts.

As March 31 approaches, it is clear that this so called protest will amount to nothing. The people of Zimbabwe have no interest in being pawns in a misguided political game. There will be no mass uprising, no large-scale demonstrations, and no shift in power as some naive activists wish to believe. This event will fade into irrelevance, serving only as a reminder that baseless agitation without a solid foundation is destined to fail. Zimbabwe is not in a state of crisis that warrants reckless action. Stability, growth, and progress are the priorities, and the nation will continue moving forward without being distracted by political fantasies.

Furthermore, those who genuinely want to make a difference should engage in constructive dialogue and work through established channels rather than resorting to disruptive protests. Economic progress requires stability, and Zimbabweans understand that political theatrics do not build roads, schools, or businesses. The March 31 protest is a distraction from the real issues at hand, which require collaboration, investment, and policy-driven solutions rather than empty demonstrations. History has shown that reckless uprisings do not yield meaningful results, and the sooner these misguided activists accept this reality, the better for everyone.

Zimbabweans have come too far to be swayed by futile protests that serve no purpose other than to create disorder. The Government remains focused on development, and the people of Zimbabwe are more interested in practical solutions than in unrealistic political fantasies. As March 31 passes, it will become evident that this so-called uprising was nothing more than an empty promise that failed to resonate with the nation. The country will move forward, as it always has, leaving behind those who choose to waste their energy on pointless and ineffective attempts to disrupt the peace.
