Freedom of expression and democracy should never be abused

By Rudo Saungweme

It’s a shame that some fellow Zimbabweans cry for freedom of expression and democracy so that they can abuse them.

The opposition party MDC think that freedom of expression is a way of settling scores and only applies to the one who yells for it. Members of the opposition parties in Zimbabwe are busy abusing freedom of expression through settling their own scores. They are crying for freedom of expression and democracy to achieve their selfish desires. This is wrong.

The new dispensation has nurtured freedom of expression which was hard to come by in the old dispensation.

However members of the opposition parties particularly MDC, are now infringing human rights in the name of freedom expression. If you do not think like them, you are tainted a threat to democracy.

Zimbabweans must appreciate the freedom given to them by the new dispensation at the same time respecting other people.

Its high time Zimbabweans get educated on respecting Ubuntu as they enact their freedom. The MDC party which purports to be democratic is far from the reality on the ground. Charity begins at home. The district congresses they are holding countrywide are marred with violence and stifling of freedom of expression and democracy.

MDC leader Nelson Chamisa is quiet about the terror groups responsible for violence to his advantage. Chamisa wants to retain the MDC presidency in their forthcoming elective congress at whatever cost.

Many people are being injured in these district congresses simply because they do not want Chamisa. Recently, in Marondera Central, the MDC house of assembly member Caston Matewa was the attacked reason being that he is aligned to MDC Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora. Then one wonder is this what they call democracy. Democracy and respect must be interwoven.

In Marondera again, a terror group aligned to Chamisa has been created so as to threaten the pro Mwonzora faction. The terror group known as Fire, vandalised a car for, MDC ward 4 Councillor Charles Ngwena on Saturday simply because he declared himself pro Mwonzora.

Those who are bootlicking Chamisa are the ones who have appeared to be violent so as weaken the pro Mwonzora faction. One can deduce that this type of behaviour in MDC does not demonstrate democracy but kills democracy.

The raising of hands to choose a candidate in their on-going district elective congresses has also killed democracy. MDC supporters are being forced to raise a hand in favour of Chamisa’s candidature only because of fearing to be attacked by Chamisa`s allies.

The threat to democracy has caused MDC supporters to leave the party. Its supporters have now realized that Chamisa has the makings of an authoritarian leader and he will be disastrous if ever allowed to rule Zimbabwe.
