Zimbabwe among top 10 African Countries with highest coal reserves

Zimbabwe has been ranked among the top 10 African countries with the highest coal reserves in 2025, according to a recent report by Business Insider Africa. The listing has been welcomed by local economists who say the recognition highlights the country’s untapped potential in the energy and mining sectors.

Zimbabwe is estimated to have over 12 billion tonnes of coal, primarily concentrated in Hwange and surrounding areas. The ranking places the country alongside other coal-rich nations such as South Africa, Nigeria, and Mozambique.

Speaking to this publication, economist Dr. Talent Charumba said the listing is a positive development for the economy.:

Coal remains one of Zimbabwe’s most valuable natural resources. This recognition will likely enhance investor confidence, especially at a time when the country is working to boost mining output and energy generation,” he said.

The mining sector is a critical part of Zimbabwe’s economy, contributing significantly to export earnings and employment. The government has set a target of growing the mining industry into a US$ 12 billion economy by 2030. Coal is expected to play a major role in that strategy, with several projects underway to expand thermal power generation and coal exports.

Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube recently emphasized the importance of a gradual energy transition, during a policy briefing in Harare , warning that a sudden shift away from coal could negatively impact the economy.

We must ensure that our transition to cleaner energy is balanced. Coal still plays a key role in powering industries and creating jobs,” he said.

However, environmental analyst, Simon Zvuvi raised concerns about the long-term effects of coal use, especially as Zimbabwe is a signatory to the Paris Agreement.

“Continued investment in coal could jeopardize climate goals, however Government officials have stressed the importance of parallel investments in renewable energy to ensure a sustainable transition,” he said

Meanwhile, Government has indicated that further exploration and infrastructure development will be key to fully unlocking the value of its coal reserves in the coming years.
