Passenger transport associations have assured the public that all transport services will operate normally today, dismissing calls for a national shutdown.

The Passengers Transport Association (PTA) confirmed in a statement yesterday that commuters can expect uninterrupted services across all routes.

"PTA wishes to advise the public that transport will be operating normally and distances itself from the purported National Shutdown by some rogue personalities. We encourage the public to report any errant drivers who refuse to transport passengers using our hotline,” the association stated.

This publication observed normal operations during the morning rush hour, with kombis and buses efficiently transporting commuters from high-density suburbs including Chitungwiza, Mabvuku, Budiriro, and Epworth to Harare's central business district.

Several kombi drivers vehemently opposed the shutdown calls, emphasising their responsibilities to both family and nation.

"I have school fees to pay and a family to feed – why would I join a shutdown? My passengers depend on me just as I depend on this job,” said Tinashe Mhofu, a driver on the Chitungwiza-Town route.

His sentiments were echoed by Leonard Dube, who plies the Epworth route, who said, "Transport is an essential service. We kept working during COVID-19; why would we stop now? Will those calling for shutdowns come and feed our children?"

The PTA has deployed monitors to major ranks to ensure compliance, while police have increased visibility at transport hubs to maintain order.

Commuters expressed relief at the normal operations, with many stating they couldn't afford to miss workdays.

"These shutdowns only hurt the poor. I'm glad the drivers are being sensible," said Martha Chiweshe, a vendor who commutes daily from Budiriro.

The PTA reiterated its commitment to keepZimbabwe moving, urging all transporters to maintain normal operations and commuters to report any disruptions immediately.
