President Mnangagwa has appointed Major General Emmanuel Matatu, as the new Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA), promoting him to the rank of Lieutenant General with immediate effect.

The appointment, made in line with constitutional and legal provisions, is expected to further strengthen the country’s defence and security forces.

Announcing the decision yesterday, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr. Martin Rushwaya, stated:

"His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, Cde Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, acting in terms of Section 216(2) as read with Section 89 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe and Sections 11(1)(a) and 11(4) of the Defence Act (Chapter 11:02), has appointed Major General Emmanuel Matatu to the rank of Lieutenant General and Commander of the Zimbabwe National Army with immediate effect."

Lieutenant General Matatu brings extensive experience in military leadership, having served with distinction in various capacities within the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.

His appointment is widely seen as a move to enhance the operational effectiveness and strategic direction of the ZNA.

He takes over from Retired Lieutenant General Anselem Sanyatwe, who previously served as Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Tanzania before his tenure as ZNA Commander.

Lieutenant General  Sanyatwe, who is now the Minister of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture played a key role in strengthening diplomatic relations between Zimbabwe and Tanzania during his time as ambassador, contributing to bilateral cooperation in defence and other sectors.

The new army chief is expected to lead the ZNA in maintaining peace and security, ensuring the country’s defence forces remain well-coordinated and prepared to protect Zimbabwe’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

His leadership is also anticipated to bolster national stability and enhance cooperation between the military and other national institutions.

Under the leadership of Lieutenant General Matatu, the ZNA is expected to continue playing a vital role in safeguarding the nation, while upholding discipline and excellence within the ranks.
