The Ministry of Health and Child Care has assured the public that it is taking immediate steps to resolve key challenges at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital following a demonstration by nursing staff on March 17, 2025.

In a press statement released yesterday, the Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, said Government was prioritising the hospital’s water supply issues, which have been a major concern.

“We are working on repairing the 2.5-megalitre water tank as soon as possible. This will help improve storage capacity and ensure a more consistent water supply from the Harare City Council,” he said.

Another pressing issue has been the hospital’s malfunctioning elevators, which have affected operations, particularly in critical areas, such as maternity services.

Dr. Mombeshora confirmed that three elevators were currently under repair, and one is expected to be operational within the next few days.

“We are also addressing problems with the maternity and kitchen elevators to ensure smooth movement of patients and staff,” he added.

In an effort to ease transportation challenges for hospital staff, the ministry has provided a second bus from its headquarters.

“We understand the difficulties faced by our workers, and the provision of another bus will go a long way in improving their daily commute,” said Dr. Mombeshora.

The Minister also addressed concerns about staff accommodation and cafeteria services, stating that improvements are underway in line with government policies to enhance working conditions for healthcare professionals.

On the issue of medical supply shortages, Dr. Mombeshora assured the public that the ministry is taking urgent steps to ensure the availability of essential medicines and equipment.

“We remain committed to providing high-quality healthcare and creating a supportive environment for both patients and staff,” he emphasised.

Government’s response comes after hospital staff staged a demonstration over poor working conditions, highlighting critical issues affecting service delivery. The Ministry of Health and Child Care’s intervention signals a commitment to addressing these concerns and improving healthcare services at one of the country’s largest referral hospitals.
