This year marks 45 years since Zimbabwe and Cuba established formal diplomatic relations—an enduring partnership rooted in shared struggles, mutual support, and a commitment to global justice.

The milestone was commemorated during the visit of His Excellency Juan Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of the National Assembly of People’s Power and Council of State of Cuba.

As part of the celebrations, he laid a wreath at the monument dedicated to Cuba’s founding leader, Commander Fidel Castro, in recognition of his unwavering support for Zimbabwe’s liberation.

The Cuban delegation later toured the Museum of African Liberation, where they handed over Cuban artefacts to the museum’s chairperson, Professor Simbi Mubako. The artefacts serve as a testament to Cuba’s historical solidarity with Zimbabwe and the broader African continent.

Speaking at the event, yesterday, the President of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the People, Fernando González, reaffirmed Cuba’s deep appreciation for Zimbabwe’s support in calling for the removal of the illegal economic embargo imposed on Cuba by the West.

He emphasized that Zimbabwe has been a strong ally in international forums, advocating for Cuba’s right to economic freedom and self-determination.

Zimbabwe’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Sheillah Chikomo, highlighted the significance of the milestone, describing it as more than just a diplomatic achievement.

“This is not just a celebration of a diplomatic milestone, but a demonstration of how countries, despite geographical distance, have forged enduring partnerships based on shared values and aspirations. Be reassured that we are determined to take this relationship to a new and higher level, underpinned by a shared desire to build mutually beneficial cooperation and to fight for a more just, fairer, and more equitable global political and economic order,” she stated.

She further acknowledged Cuba’s critical role in Zimbabwe’s development, particularly in education and healthcare. Over the years, Cuba has provided scholarships for Zimbabwean students in medical and technical fields, helping to strengthen the country’s human resource capacity. Cuban doctors and specialists have also contributed significantly to Zimbabwe’s healthcare system.

Beyond education and health, the Zimbabwe-Cuba partnership extends into agriculture, science, and technology. In recognition of this long-standing friendship, Zimbabwe renamed Harare’s Charter Road to Fidel Castro Road in 2020, cementing the legacy of Cuban-Zimbabwean solidarity.

As Zimbabwe and Cuba mark 45 years of diplomatic ties, both nations reaffirm their commitment to strengthening cooperation and advocating for a fairer global order. The enduring friendship between Harare and Havana stands as a powerful example of solidarity, resilience, and shared aspirations for a better future.
