ZRP Seizes Dagga and Smuggled Goods in Anti-Smuggling Operation

Over the weekend, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) intensified its anti-smuggling operation targeting cross-border buses, aimed at curbing illegal trade and the trafficking of illicit substances. This operation, which spanned key routes often used by cross-border travellers, led to the successful recovery of significant amounts of smuggled goods, including dagga (marijuana) and second-hand clothes.

In a statement, Assistant Commissioner Paul T. Nyathi highlighted the importance of the operation, emphasizing the scale of the findings and the significance of these busts in the broader fight against smuggling.

“The ZRP remains committed to safeguarding Zimbabwe’s borders from illegal activities, including the trafficking of illicit substances and goods. Over the weekend, our officers managed to intercept significant consignments of smuggled goods, including large quantities of dagga and bales of second-hand clothing, which are often unlawfully imported without paying the appropriate duties,” Nyathi said

In addition to the recovery of illegal drugs, which are a growing concern in the country, the operation also uncovered bales of second-hand clothes in the Mbare area. These clothes are often smuggled across Zimbabwe’s borders and sold without any customs duties paid, putting local businesses at a disadvantage and raising health and safety concerns for consumers.

Commissioner Nyathi addressed these issues, stressing, “Second-hand clothing has become a major concern for us. Not only does it evade customs duties, but it also presents potential health risks, as many of these clothes are not properly sanitized before being sold.”

The operation also sent a clear message to those engaged in smuggling that the ZRP is prepared to take swift and decisive action.

“We will continue to intensify our efforts to combat smuggling and disrupt these illegal networks that are operating across the country. Smuggling, whether it involves drugs or counterfeit goods, undermines our economy, creates risks for our citizens, and violates the rule of law,” Nyathi affirmed.

As investigations continue into these smuggling activities, Nyathi encouraged the public to remain vigilant and support the police’s efforts.

We urge all Zimbabweans to report any suspicious activities related to smuggling or sale of illegal goods, as this will go a long way in helping us combat these issues effectively,” he said.

The successful operation marks another chapter in the ZRP’s broader strategy to secure Zimbabwe’s borders and protect the nation from harmful smuggling activities. With continued collaboration with regional law enforcement agencies, the ZRP is determined to dismantle the smuggling syndicates that continue to undermine the country’s laws and economy.
