Government has commenced the rehabilitation of the Murambinda-Birchenough Bridge Road, marking another milestone in the Second Republic’s drive to modernize Zimbabwe’s road network.

The long-awaited project, which covers a 120-kilometer stretch, is now in full swing, with contractors already on-site working on the first phase.

Speaking in an interview, with this publication, Manicaland Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza, expressed satisfaction with the progress on road projects across the province.
“The rehabilitation of roads in Manicaland is on track. The Nyanga-Ruvangwe Road has already been upgraded, and works on the Nyanga-Birchenough stretch are progressing well. This is the Second Republic in action,” he said.

For years, travellers have endured long and difficult journeys along the gravel road, but the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme (ERRP) is set to change that.
“We used to take three hours to travel between Murambinda and Birchenough Bridge. This development is a game changer,” said a local resident.

Another citizen added, “This road is crucial for our connectivity, and we appreciate the Government’s intervention. We hope the project will be completed quickly.”
The road upgrade will include a 20mm asphalt overlay, improving the surface quality and making travel more efficient.
“The contractor is on target, and all machinery is in place. We have started work on the sub-grade level, adding fill material to reach the required design levels,” explained Manicaland Deputy Provincial Engineer, Patrick Muropa.

The contractor, Engineer Shelton Ncube, added, “On the bridge section, bush clearing has been completed, and we are now digging foundation apartments and footings.”
Beyond improving transport infrastructure, the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme is transforming communities, enhancing connectivity, and fostering economic growth. The modernized road is expected to boost trade, improve access to essential services, and create employment opportunities in the region.

With work now underway, the Murambinda-Birchenough Bridge Road will soon offer safer, faster, and more reliable travel, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to developing world-class infrastructure that benefits all Zimbabweans.
