Zimbabwe is now out of the woods in terms of food security, with the bulk of maize and other crops having reached maturity. The positive development follows favorable rainfall patterns that have significantly boosted agricultural prospects across the country.
Both the Government and farmer organizations have expressed optimism about this year’s agricultural season, citing favorable weather conditions that have revived hopes for food security.
In an interview with this publication, President of the Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union (ZCFU), Dr. Shadreck Makombe, confirmed the encouraging outlook attributing it to improved rainfall.
“We are definitely out of the woods in terms of food security, thanks to the heavens, which provided the much-needed rains. The crop is looking very good,”Dr. Makombe said.
Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Permanent Secretary, Professor Obert Jiri, echoed similar sentiments, stating that late rains have played a crucial role in transforming the season’s fortunes.
“From our preliminary assessment, the rains in the second half have done the magic. Farmers are now hopeful of a strong yield, and we can safely say this season is different from last year. Zimbabwe is on course to achieving food security,” said Professor Jiri.
Farmers who planted early and medium-season maize varieties are already seeing their crops mature, with the rest at the tussling stage. Many are now confident of a good harvest, ensuring adequate food supplies at both household and national levels.
“Most of us planted early, and the crops have already matured. The other crops are at the tussling stage, and with these good rains, we are set for a strong harvest,” said one farmer.
Despite the positive outlook, authorities are urging farmers to remain vigilant against threats such as the fall armyworm, which can significantly reduce yields if not controlled. Farmers have been advised to monitor their fields closely and take necessary pest control measures to protect their crops.
With the bulk of the maize crop now maturing and favorable conditions continuing, Zimbabwe is poised for a successful harvest, bringing relief to both farmers and consumers after a challenging agricultural season last year.
