The media must operate within the confines of the law and uphold ethical journalism, Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr. Jenfan Muswere has said.
Speaking to the media recently, Minister Muswere warned journalists against reckless reporting, stating that some media institutions have been providing a platform for treasonous, defamatory, and inflammatory statements.
“Of late, we have identified a number of media institutions that have been providing a platform for treason, a platform for defamatory, inciteful, and inflammatory statements,” he said.
While reaffirming that Zimbabwe upholds freedom of expression, as guaranteed under Section 61 of the Constitution, Minister Muswere stressed that this right does not extend to spreading misinformation or violating other people’s rights.
“In terms of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, the freedom of expression is guaranteed, but the freedom to violate other people’s rights is not part of the constitutional process,” he added.
To strengthen media professionalism and accountability, Government has introduced several legislative measures, including the Freedom of Information Act, the Zimbabwe Media Commission Act, and amendments to the Broadcasting Services Act.
“The Government has continued to usher in many policy and legislative interventions to support the robustness, diversity, and plurality of the media industry. These measures ensure that democratic structures and governance continue to be upheld,” he said.
Minister Muswere also took the opportunity to address speculation regarding unity within Government, dismissing rumours of internal divisions within the leadership.
“There is no noise in the cockpit, and as the New Dispensation, we will continue to democratically and economically roll out many projects to empower the people of Zimbabwe,” he said.
He reiterated that the Second Republic remains strong, with President Mnangagwa’s administration continuing to spearhead economic and social development initiatives across the country.
“In terms of the leadership that has been provided by His Excellency the President, Dr. ED Mnangagwa, who was democratically elected both in ZANU PF and by an overwhelming majority in the August 2023 general elections, his administration continues to implement inclusive, life-changing programmes,” said Minister Muswere.
With more than 8 000 development projects launched nationwide, Minister Muswere said Government’s popularity continues to rise, and its commitment to uplifting livelihoods remains unwavering.
