Government has assured transparency in the allocation of trading spaces at the newly constructed Mbare Musika market, as the verification exercise for beneficiaries nears completion. The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the market and restore business operations after last year’s fire.
During a tour of the facility, Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Jenfan Muswere, emphasized the project’s significance in strengthening agricultural value chains.
“All the products from our farms find their way into markets like Mbare Musika.
“This project supports economic empowerment efforts by His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa as we move toward Vision 2030,” he said.
The Government partnered with Masimba Holdings to construct the market, which will accommodate traders while work continues on the main structure.
Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, highlighted the need for fairness in space allocation.
“For an orderly allocation of space, we need cooperation, honesty, and transparency.
“Selfish interests will derail efforts to modernize Mbare Musika,” she said.
Minister of Local Government and Public Works,Daniel Garwe, echoed the Government’s commitment to preventing corruption.
“No one is allowed to impose beneficiaries or demand deposits. This process will be fair and transparent,” he said.
Harare Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Senator Charles Tavengwa, praised the progress made under the Second Republic.
“This is one of Harare’s biggest development projects, and we must safeguard it,” he said.
Beneficiaries welcomed the Government’s intervention, with traders expressing relief that they now have a secure, modernized space to rebuild their businesses.
“We are grateful for the Government’s support. The new market has proper sheds, which will help during the rainy season,” said one trader.
Following the fire that destroyed part of the market in October last year, the phased redevelopment is set to enhance infrastructure and improve trading conditions.
