The Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe has announced a firm Government stance against land barons, vowing decisive action to restore order to land allocation processes and curb illegal activities.

Speaking during a media briefing in Harare yesterday, Minister Garwe underscored Government's commitment to addressing the issue with urgency and accountability.

"The Government has zero tolerance for land barons. We will continue to implement stringent measures to ensure that illegal land allocations and fraudulent activities are eradicated. These practices not only exploit citizens, but also hinder our efforts to create orderly urban settlements and sustainable housing projects," said Minister Garwe.

Minister Garwe highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen the capacity of local authorities to combat illegal land sales and hold offenders accountable.

"Government is committed to ensuring that councils and other local authorities are fully equipped to detect and address illegal land transactions. Those found complicit in these activities will also be held accountable," he said.

The Minister called for collaboration between local authorities, law enforcement agencies, the media, and other stakeholders to tackle land baron’s activities effectively. He acknowledged the critical role of the media in exposing the activities and educating the public.

"By working together, we can eliminate these corrupt practices and ensure that every Zimbabwean has access to safe, legal, and affordable housing,” Minister Garwe emphasized.

Government’s efforts aim to create a transparent and orderly land allocation process, ensuring that housing projects meet the needs of all citizens.

Through decisive action and stakeholder engagement, Government hopes to put an end to the exploitation of citizens by land barons and pave the way for sustainable urban development.
