The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) and the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) have launched a joint road safety awareness campaign aimed at promoting responsible driving and the reduction of road accidents in Zimbabwe.
The campaign, themed "Normal Speed Meets Every Need," seeks to encourage drivers to adhere to speed limits and practice safe driving habits while highlighting the environmental impact of travel.
EMA spokesperson Amkela Sidange emphasized the collaborative efforts between the two agencies, noting that EMA previously partnered with TSCZ on similar initiatives.
"This is not the first time EMA has partnered with TSCZ, as we have billboards with environmental messages on major highways. This time, we have focused on setting up billboards that combine environmental awareness with safety messages, aimed at reducing road accidents while also promoting green travel practices."
"The primary goal of the initiative is to educate motorists on the importance of following speed limits and adopting responsible driving to prevent accidents. With road traffic accidents being a leading cause of injury and death in the country, both agencies are focusing on raising awareness of the risks associated with speeding and reckless driving," said Sidange.
As part of the campaign, billboards with road safety messages will be displayed along some of Zimbabwe's busiest highways.
"The campaign will also include educational materials and promotional items to be distributed to travelers during rest stops on major roads. These materials will highlight both safe driving practices and the importance of protecting the environment during travel," Sidange added.
Sidange further emphasized the importance of adopting eco-friendly travel habits, encouraging travelers to reduce their ecological footprint.
"The agency is urging travelers to adopt green practices, such as placing litter in bins provided in public vehicles and ensuring proper disposal of waste during their journeys. EMA and TSCZ are appealing to all road users to join forces in promoting road safety and reducing accidents. By working together, we can make Zimbabwe’s roads safer for everyone, reduce environmental damage, and save lives"
TSCZ has long been committed to promoting road safety, and its partnership with EMA is seen as a significant step toward achieving this goal. The two agencies are also calling on all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport operators, to work together to ensure the safety of everyone on the road.
