Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister, Mthuli Ncube expressed hope that forecast of normal to above-normal rainfall patterns across the country from now until March next year would result in significantly enhanced water levels at Lake Kariba, potentially leading to improved power generation.
During a press briefing Minister Ncube stated, “We anticipate significant rainfall, which will result in better water yield towards the end of this year and into early next year. We expect Kariba to perform better during the April to March period.” He emphasized that the expected increase in water levels would have a direct positive impact on the nation's power supply.
The minister expressed optimism that the enhanced capacity of the Kariba Hydroelectric Power Station will help mitigate power cuts that have plagued the nation in recent years.
“As we approach the end of the first quarter of 2025, we expect a substantial contribution from Kariba to our power supply,” he added.
The announcement comes as the country grapples with ongoing electricity shortages, affecting households and industries alike. To provide further context, energy expert Dr.Tendai Mutasa commented, “If the predicted rainfall materializes, it could indeed bring relief to the power situation in Zimbabwe. However, it’s crucial that the government also invests in alternative energy sources to avoid over-reliance on hydroelectric power.”
In addition, environmentalist Chipo Nyoni highlighted the need for sustainable practices, stating, “While we welcome the expected rainfall, it is imperative that we manage our water resources responsibly to ensure long-term energy security. Investments in conservation and infrastructure are key to maximizing the benefits of our natural resources.”
The government continues to monitor weather patterns closely and is taking proactive measures to ensure that the anticipated rainfall translates into enhanced energy production and economic recovery. With hopes pinned on the forthcoming wet season, stakeholders remain vigilant, prepared to adapt to changing conditions and ensure a stable power supply for all Zimbabweans.
