In a major milestone for Zimbabwe’s digital development, President Mnangagwa officially launched NetOne Cellular (Private) Limited's 5G connectivity during an event held at Boka Tobacco Auction Floors yesterday.
The launch, which also included the commissioning of 275 4G-enabled base stations by NetOne, along with 14 additional 4G base stations erected by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) as part of the Tower Relocation Project (TRP), marked a significant leap forward in the country's quest to bridge the digital divide.
Vice President Colonel (Rtd) Kembo Mohadi delivered the speech on behalf of President Mnangagwa, highlighting Government's unwavering commitment to improving digital infrastructure, particularly in rural and underserved areas, and enhancing the quality of life for all Zimbabweans.
"This 5G connectivity will not only elevate the quality of life for our citizens but will also strengthen Zimbabwe’s position as a competitive and resilient player in the global economy. With faster internet and greater connectivity, our businesses will prosper, our industries will gain a competitive edge, and our citizens will be more connected than ever before. However, we will not rest on our laurels," said President Mnangagwa, in the speech read by Vice President Mohadi.
The Tower Relocation Project (TRP) is specifically aimed at expanding digital access to rural and previously underserved communities, recognizing the need to close the gap in digital inclusion.
The new 4G and 5G networks are expected to vastly improve access to information, educational resources, and economic opportunities in these areas, helping to create a more equitable digital environment.
Minister of Information, Communication Technology, and Postal Services, Tatenda Mavetera, applauded POTRAZ and NetOne for their commitment to advancing Zimbabwe's telecommunications infrastructure, noting that the activation of 5G technology is a significant step forward in positioning the country on the global technological stage.
“I extend my deepest gratitude to NetOne, POTRAZ, and all stakeholders for their unwavering dedication in turning this vision into reality. The activation of 20 new 5G base stations marks the dawn of a new digital era for Zimbabwe—one characterized by unmatched connectivity, innovation, and growth. Let us continue to embrace technology with vision and purpose, leveraging its potential to reshape our nation’s future. Together, we are building a legacy of digital empowerment and positioning Zimbabwe to stand at the forefront of the global technological landscape,” said Minister Mavetera.
With the establishment of 5G connectivity and the continued expansion of 4G networks, Zimbabwe is taking a significant step forward in its technological evolution.
This infrastructure is expected to play a key role in fostering innovation, driving economic development, and enhancing digital access across the nation, particularly in underserved areas.
