The Gutu Half Marathon is making a return this November after years of inactivity, with a focus on promoting healthy lifestyles and community unity.

The event, organised by the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture in collaboration with the Muzenda family, aims to combat the growing prevalence of non-communicable diseases by encouraging physical activity and fostering a sense of national pride.

This year’s marathon, set to take place in Gutu Mpandawana, seeks to increase participation in sports and recreation while building social solidarity within the community.

At the event's official announcement last Friday, acting Deputy Director for Masvingo Province, Rangarirai Gobvu, underscored the significance of the marathon for the Gutu community.

“The return of the Gutu Half Marathon is a testament to the community’s resilience and passion for sports. We are thrilled to bring back this iconic event, which will not only promote athletic excellence but also foster unity and social cohesion,” Gobvu said.

He further emphasised the positive impact the marathon had during the tenure of the late Dr. Simon Muzenda as Vice President , noting its role in boosting the local economy and enhancing Gutu's reputation on the national and international stage.

“During Dr. Simon Muzenda's tenure, the Gutu Half Marathon was more than just a sporting event; it was a catalyst for growth and development in our community. It provided a platform to showcase Gutu’s rich cultural heritage while boosting the local economy. We are committed to restoring that legacy and believe this event will once again uplift our community,” Gobvu added.

This year’s event will feature a range of athletic categories, including a 21-kilometre race for men and women, a 10-kilometre race, a 5-kilometre wheelchair event, and a 100-metre fun race for senior citizens.

Participants from all ten provinces of Zimbabwe are encouraged to take part, and the marathon will emphasise the importance of physical, mental, and emotional health.

The marathon will culminate in a cultural celebration, with the Mzee Bira music and dance gala, showcasing the rich heritage of Gutu and bringing the community together in a festive atmosphere.
