Young farmers from Matabeleland South’s seven districts were yesterday awarded heifers through the Presidential Youth Empowerment Scheme, in a significant boost to youth empowerment and agricultural development.
The initiative, spearheaded by President Mnangagwa, aims to enhance livestock production, particularly in rural areas, as part of the broader effort to empower Zimbabwe’s youth and strengthen the country's agricultural sector.
The handover ceremony, held at Shangani Ranch, was led by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Dr. Evelyn Ndlovu, and was attended by several Government officials and political leaders.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Ndlovu emphasized the vital role livestock plays in rural economies, particularly in Matabeleland South province, where cattle farming is crucial to both survival and wealth generation.
“The promotion of the Presidential Heifer Pass-On Scheme will greatly impact livestock production and ultimately improve the livelihoods of the youth involved. I encourage all the young farmers to take full advantage of the resources provided and make the most of this opportunity. We have outlined clear strategies to ensure the success of this program, and it’s up to you to implement them effectively,” said Dr. Ndlovu.
She further underscored the importance of resilience and hard work, encouraging the youth to see the scheme as more than just an opportunity to raise cattle, but as a path toward building responsibility and securing a brighter future.
“This is not just about cattle, but about building resilience, responsibility, and a future that contributes to the development of the nation,” she added.
Representing the beneficiaries, ZANU PF Youth Chairman, Moses Langa ,expressed deep gratitude for the program, commending the Government’s commitment to youth empowerment and agricultural development.
“We are very thankful to His Excellency for his unwavering commitment to youth empowerment. This program will allow us to contribute significantly to the development of the country’s livestock sector and secure a better future for ourselves and our families,” Langa said.
Speaking at the same event, Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Omphile Marupi, lauded President Mnangagwa’s vision of creating a new generation of agricultural leaders who will drive economic growth through sustainable practices.
“Our President’s dream is to raise a generation of young farmers who will not only safeguard Zimbabwe’s food security but also become key drivers of economic growth through sustainable agricultural practices. He envisions a future where these young farmers will lead the way in modernizing our agricultural sector, utilizing innovative techniques and technologies,” Dr. Marupi noted.
The Presidential Heifer Pass-On Scheme has already reached multiple provinces across Zimbabwe, benefiting youth in Masvingo, Midlands, and Mashonaland East Provinces. The scheme continues to be a cornerstone of the Government’s strategy for youth empowerment and agricultural transformation.
