Government is ramping up efforts to rehabilitate and construct roads across the country, aiming to ease the burden on the commuting public and facilitate trade between communities.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development announced a series of ongoing projects yesterday, highlighting the Government's commitment to improving the nation’s road infrastructure.
The Ministry revealed that construction of a detour is currently underway on the Marondera-Wedza road, specifically on the section from Bonongwe to Chop Chop.
"We are committed to minimising disruptions during the construction process and ensuring the successful completion of this project," the Ministry stated, emphasising its dedication to delivering quality road networks.
In another development, the Ministry reported that priming is underway on the Birchenough-Murambinda Road construction project.
The project is progressing according to schedule, with surfacing expected to commence shortly.
"We look forward to delivering a world-class road network that supports economic growth and development," the Ministry added.
Further highlighting the scope of the ongoing works, the Ministry informed that construction is actively underway on the Mutyira River Bridge and Twin River Bridge approaches in Chimanimani District, Manicaland Province.
These critical infrastructure projects are expected to significantly improve road safety and enhance connectivity within the region.
Government's initiative has been met with widespread praise from various stakeholders and members of the public.
Tinashe Mlambo, a truck driver who frequently use the Marondera-Wedza road, commended the Government, saying, "These roadworks are long overdue. The improvements will not only make our journeys safer but also quicker, which is crucial for business."
Another resident, Mercy Hove, expressed her appreciation for the Government's commitment to infrastructure development, noting, "It's encouraging to see the Government prioritising roads. Good roads mean better access to markets and services, which can transform communities like ours."
Transport sector expert Blessing Ziwenga also lauded the efforts, stating, "These projects demonstrate the Government’s proactive approach to addressing the long-standing issues of road infrastructure in Zimbabwe. By focussing on key routes that connect communities, the government is not just building roads but laying the foundation for economic resilience and growth."
Prior to hosting the SADC Summit last month, Government reaffirmed its commitment to continue road construction and rehabilitation efforts beyond the summit, emphasising that these initiatives are part of a long-term strategy to improve the country's road network.
This commitment aligns with President Mnangagwa's Vision 2030, which aims to transform Zimbabwe into an upper middle-income economy by 2030.
