President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed Dr Obadiah Moyo as the new Minister of Health and Child Care. He is among the technocrats whom the President chose outside Parliament.
Dr Obadiah Moyo is a visionary and creative leader with a proven track record in both medical and executive management. He is an experienced manager who adopts professional hands on approach. He is skilled in problem solving and obtaining achievements by using initiative and drive to gain results. He believes in loyalty and commitment to an organization, utilizing available facilities and resources to produce the best possible results.
He is considered as a leading medical strategist in Zimbabwe. He won several international awards in recognition of his contributions to the international society in Nephrology and Pathology. Through his achievements, he is rated as an eminent strategist in the medical industry in Zimbabwe and the region.
Educated in Zimbabwe, United Kingdom and the West Indies, Dr Moyo earned several academic qualifications among them;
- Doctor of Medicine degree (MD)(West Indies),
- Master of Philosophy degree in Medicine (MPhil Med)(UZ),
- Postgraduate Award in The Management of Chronic Kidney Disease (PGA,MCKD)(Warwick Uni, UK),
- Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath)(UK),
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health(FRSPH)(UK),
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB)(UK),
- Fellow of the International Society in Nephrology (FISN).
Dr Moyo is a registered Renal Specialist and Consultant Chemical Pathologist.
In 2000, Dr Moyo was elected as Deputy President of the Health Professions Authority of Zimbabwe, which is the overall body responsible for the maintenance of good medical practice in the country and overseeing the functioning of the individual medical professional councils. In 2004 he was elected as the Acting President of Health Professions Authority until the end of his term in 2005.
Dr Moyo was a founder member of the World Council for Renal Care and is also a founder of the Zimbabwe Kidney Foundation Renal Services where he serves as the Chairman and Executive Director. He has been working for the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare since 1981.
He was appointed as the Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Chitungwiza Central Hospital in September 2005, a position he presently holds. Under his leadership, Chitungwiza Central Hospital became the first Hospital in Zimbabwe to be ISO certified.
He once served as the Chairman of the Finance, Human Resources and Administration of the National Biotechnology Board.
Dr Moyo previously held the positions of Chairman of Doves Holdings (Pvt) Ltd, Chairman of the Zimbabwe National Quality Assurance Program.
In 2007, Dr Moyo was awarded the Zimbabwe Institute of Management Manager of the Year First Runner Up in recognition of his contribution and dedication to developing and promoting best practices in management and leadership.
In 2013 Dr Moyo received the LASOF Career and Leadership Builder Award in recognition of his distinguished leadership in the Health Sector.
In 2014, Chitungwiza Central Hospital (CCH), Service of the Year award which saw the institution automatically qualifying for the SADC Annual Quality Awards. The award is given to the outstanding, quality service delivering, ISO Certified Organisation under the National Standardization, Quality Assurance (NAQAS), Accreditation and Meteorology (SQAM) committee.
Dr Moyo also won the 2nd prize in the Megafest Top 20 Business Awards 2015.
In February 2016, Chitungwiza Central Hospital was voted best hospital in Zimbabwe and won the Zimbabwe Top Leadership Excellence Hospital of the year Award. Dr Moyo was equally honoured at the same occasion for being the best leader in the medical industry in Zimbabwe.
In March 2016, Dr Moyo was voted by the Zimbabwe Business Awards as the overall Zimbabwe Businessman of the year. Zimbabwe Community Leader of the Year and Chitungwiza was voted the overall Hospital of the Year and Brand of the Year.
Chitungwiza Central Hospital was chosen by the United Nations Zimbabwe as a venue for celebrating the 2013 United Nations celebrations for safe motherhood in recognition of its outstanding model for implementing systemic solutions and building strategic partnerships to successfully deliver public health services to disadvantaged communities.
With the above history of success, much is expected from this new broom.
